SEDU Video Making Experience

In SEDU we created a Public Service Announcement using Flip video cameras. Instead of taking the topic seriously we decided to have a little fun and make our announcement about Fish Rights. Plus, we added our own little spin on it by making a short clip of a Soap Opera that would be interrupted by the service announcement. The overall experience was fun and gave us a chance to be creative. The easiest part was shooting the video itself, editing wasn't too bad either. The most difficult thing was having everything done then our video not working on different computers because they were a different brand. We ended up losing all of our sound on the original video! Quickly we have to put together the video clips all over again but, finally everything worked. Unfortunately, due to this happening we lost our background music and effects so the quality of the video wasn't as good as the first. Well hope you enjoy!

New Tools #3

PREZI
Are you sick of the boring PowerPoint presentations? Try something new and create a presentation at http://prezi.com/. Anyone can create a Prezi; it is open to the public for no cost. When you sign up you can watch a get started video to learn how to use the Prezi program. You use the Prezi board canvas to write information, insert pictures, group ideas, and when you’re all finished create the path of your presentation. Prezi is a great way to keep students interested in the presentation and more fun to create themselves.

FINALE MUSIC
If you have an interest in creating and composing your own music then this website is just for you http://www.finalemusic.com/default.aspx. Finale Music is a music notation program that allows you to create your own sheet music. With the program you can choose what type of instrument, what key you want the music in, how fast or slow the music is, etc. Finale is a great product for students in band or a music theory class, unfortunately to use the program it is very expensive.

Here is a video from my senior year during basketball season; this was the most dangerous stunt I have ever accomplished! I love cheerleading and I wanted to share some of my accomplishments with everyone else.

New Tools 2: Museum Box and Go! Animate

My classmate Cody introduced to our class was Museum Box which can be found at http://museumbox.e2bn.org/. At Museum Box you can create or look up pre-made virtual boxes that help describe an event or person. For example you can make a box that is made up of items that describe the life of Abraham Lincoln or Thomas Jefferson. Each box consists of eight different cubes and in each cube you can insert text, pictures and videos. There are six different sections in each cube so you can fit a good amount of information in each box. When creating your own box you can label each cube and embed pictures and videos to help teach your future students.

Next, Dashaya showed us the tool Go! Animate at http://goanimate.com/. At Go! Animate you can create your own animated videos. You can also find videos everything from political issues to pirates. This could be used in classrooms as a unique way to learn required curriculum. You could create a video of life during the civil war or even a video about math equations. I think that this item could really spring a child’s interest in a subject that originally doesn’t interest them.

Bitstrips for Schools

A new way to keep your students attention is by making learning fun! Instead of reading boring text books why not spruce it up by using http://www.bitstrips.com/. Bitstrips is a great tool to use in the classroom, create your own comic strips or use pre-made programs to help your students learn different topics. You can dress and design your own characters, give them actions & emotions, construct a script and create the background with different props.  As a teacher you can sign up for $9.95/month or a school district can sign up $750/ year for 500 students or $1.50/ student. Not only can teachers create comic strips but, the students can make their own creations as well. Bitstrips also has activities made for all subjects including English, Science, Math, History, Social Studies, Art, Civics, Values of Education, Business & Law, Health & Phys-Ed, ESL & ELL and more. After using Bitstrips you can share your experience on the website’s blog, where you can read other’s opinions and offer your point of view. The website also provides testimonies from other teachers.

"Bitstrips for Schools is the best thing that has ever happened to my students. The students are so engaged, they don't even know how much they are learning."
- Beth Cantwell, St. Bernadine School

"I'm loving your site, as are my students. Your site really is turning my students (avid readers but reluctant writers) into kids who love to write at school and at home."
- Diana Maliszewski, Agnes Macphail Public School

New Tools

In our last class session in SEDU 183 three of my classmates presented on three new websites and products we could use as future teachers. The first website was http://www.popplet.com/. Popplet is basically as Colton described it “an endless billboard”. It is an online thought organizer that allows you to establish your thoughts and branch them together using text, videos, and pictures. Remember when you were told to brainstorm and you were given a worksheet with one big circle for the main idea and little circles connected for branching thoughts? Well Popplet is basically the same concept except you have much more freedom.
My second classmate introduced us to http://www.storyjumper.com/ . Story Jumper allows you to illustrate and write your own children’s book. The book can be up to sixteen pages and they give you templates to choose from or you can create an original. Not only can you use the clipart provided by this cite but, you can upload pictures to illustrate your story. When you’re all done you can even order a copy of the finished product and share it with others.
The last product that was presented was the website http://www.wordle.net/ . This website allows you to create as Wordle put it a “word cloud”, which basically is a jumble of words used in different colors, sizes, horizontal, or vertical. You are given a text box to start with to put whatever you desire. You could copy an article, use words that describe you, or even write a poem. After you have entered your text press go, and your words will appear, the more often you used a word the bigger it will be in the end product. If you don’t like the way the words are set up you can change the color, which way the words are written, and the font.
